The aim of the e-learning platform is to provide a technology driven platform to offer tuition to students of UHAS. While the aim is not to eliminate normal face-to-face contact between students and lecturers, the system is expected to supplement normal lectures, provide an avenue where students could readily access lectures at their leisure hours. It has been observed that for a number of reasons a student may be distracted during normal lectures. Since lectures are events that take place within specific periods, the student might have little opportunity to review what was taught if the lectures were not recorded and made available. UHAS was established to use technology for teaching and learning. The use of the e-learning platform is therefore in fulfillment of one of the objectives for establishing the University. To achieve the objective, there is the need to structure the delivery of lectures, provide high quality video recording of lectures, provide adequate data storage and to deploy a communication system that would allow both students and lecturers to have uninterrupted access to information available on the platform irrespective, of their location in the country.
Based on the above aim the immediate objectives of the first phase of the e-learning platform are to:
1. Produce high quality video recording of lectures starting with first year and Physician Assistant courses being designed with the assistance of Universities outside the country.
2. Create a platform where:
2.1 Lecturers could assess students electronically.
2.2 Instruction materials such as notes and videos could be made available to students electronically
3. Provide a platform where students and lecturers could collaborate and have meaningful discussions online.
4. To make the system accessible to lecturers and students located at the University's campuses only initially but upon a successful testing of the system, it would be extended to cover the whole nation and later onto the internet.
5. Provide video conferencing facilities that would allow interactive delivery of lectures from one campus to another and from other parts of the country and outside the country to UHAS
SOFTWARE: The MOODLE e-learning software, an Open source product has been installed and configured for this purpose.
SERVERS: which would could be configured using virtualization to use NAS storage systems of capacity not less than 5TB
COMMUNICATION BETWEEN E-LEARNING SERVER AND CLIENT DEVICES (TABLETS LAPTOPS etc) Using VPN and APN links
