The University of Health and Allied Sciences governing Council, at a meeting on December 15, 2023, approved a recommendation by the Appointments and Promotions Board to elevate Foundation Vice Chancellor Professor Fred Newton Binka to the status of Emeritus Professor, the first-ever in UHAS. In his acceptance letter, Emeritus Professor Binka stated, “I am truly humbled by the honour done me and promise to work hard to set the pace for future Emeritus Professors of the Rising Giant, UHAS.”

Binka led the University from its inception in 2011 until 2016, during which time he oversaw the establishment of administrative structures and initiated major infrastructural projects across the University, including construction of the School of Public Health in Hohoe.

In June 2022, during the ceremony to name the School of Public Health after Fred N. Binka, then-VC Professor John Gyapong noted that “Professor Binka was the right force the University needed at its budding stage to help grow it to its current enviable status.”
