Ghana’s Parliament recently observed the 30th anniversary of continuous parliamentary democracy, marked by a year-long celebration aimed at fostering citizen engagement and reflecting on the constitutional journey. The chosen theme for this commemoration is: “Thirty years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic: The Journey thus far.”

As part of the festivities, various Youth Parliaments, including the Youth Parliament of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, participated in a mock parliamentary sitting and debate on December 16, 2023 at the Nurses Training College auditorium, Ho. The topic for the debate was, “Attaining 40% women representation in Parliament in line with the Inter-Parliamentary Union resolution: Is Ghana Ready?” 

Representing UHAS, Kelvin Azameti-Mensah, a fourth-year Audiology student, and Eziel Johnson, a sixth-year Doctor of Pharmacy student, presented arguments against the motion. At the conclusion of the debate, UHAS was announced as First Runner-up, earning a trophy and medals for outstanding performance.

Other participating Youth Parliaments included the Youth Impact Parliament of Ho Technical University; Evangelical Presbyterian University College, and Nurses Training College. This event provided a platform for constructive dialogue on critical issues related to parliamentary representation and affirmed the active involvement of the youth in the democratic process.
