CURRENT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

Many students around the world, particularly in the West Africa sub-region, have found UHAS to be their university of choice. There are currently three international students enrolled in various programmes at UHAS:

Practicum/Internship Students

Most universities abroad have a mandatory fieldwork or lab investigation component of their programmes. UHAS has become the preferred institution for most students from the Cameroon, Canada, Nigeria, UK, and U.S.A. to gain first-hand, practical experience of what they study in the classroom. These students stay for two to 12 weeks. Our faculty, with their rich and varied experiences, supervise these students and grade them at the end of their research. The output of their research is mostly expected to lead to publication. (See more information under the International Programmes tab).

International Faculty

In a globally competitive world, the value of international faculty in higher education institutions cannot be underrated. They tend to bring diversity and infuse a vast amount of experiences from other contexts. UHAS is greatly committed to developing its students to be the best they can be. With the presence of international faculty, students will get the opportunity to learn from diverse perspectives.

Full-time

Prof. Elvis Tarkang (CAMEROON) is an Associate Professor at Fred Binka School of Public Health and currently, the Dean of the Office of International Programmes. He is editor-in-chief of a scientific journal and serves on a number of editorial boards of several other journals. His research areas include Adolescent Sexual and Social Behaviours, Health Promotion, HIV/AIDS Epidemiology, and Institutional workplace HIV Policy Development.

Dr. Duniesky Martinez Lopez (GUANTANANMO) is a Senior lecturer in Internal Medicine and Therapeutics at the School of Medicine and also a Fellow in Family Medicine and Community Health from Cuba. He has worked in rural Cuba as well as some rural parts of Ghana. His research areas include anaemia in children and management of stroke.

Dr. Fernando Miguel Almaguer Acevedo (CUBA) is a Senior lecturer and acting Head of Department of Pathology at the School of Medicine. Prior to this, he was a lecturer at the Medical Sciences University in Las Tunas, Cuba and the Head of Maxillofacial Department at Dr E. Guevara Teaching Hospital, also a Coordinator of the National Program of Prevention and Precocious Detection of oral Cancer in Las Tunas Province, Cuba. His areas of research is oral cancer epidemiology.

Dr. Barbara Yordanis Hernandez Cervantes (GUANTANANMO) is the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department of the School of Medicine. She is a senior lecturer and Fellow in General Surgery. Prior to this, she was Senior lecturer at the Surgical Department at “General and Gyneco-obstetric Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agosthino Neto" Guantánamo, Cuba and Head of Surgical Department at Wa Reginal Hospital, Upper West, Ghana; she also worked as general surgeon in the St Joseph Hospital and SDA hospital, Koforidua, Ghana. Her research areas include chronic pancreatitis treatment.

Dr. Serafin Alcina Pereira (CUBA) is a Senior Lecturer at the Emergency and Critical Care Medicine of the UHAS School of Medicine. From 2016. Prior to this, He was a Senior Lecturer at the University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. He is a member of the Cuban Society of Intensive and Emergency Medical Care and is also a fellow in Family Medicine and Intensive and Emergency Medical Care. Hi research areas are critical illness in adult and critical maternal diseases.

Dr. Gertrudis de Los Angeles Hernandez Gonzalez (CUBA) is a Senior Lecturer and heads the Internal Medicine and Therapeutics Department at the School of Medicine, UHAS. She has over 24 years’ experience as a Medical Doctor in Cuba. She has a First and Second Degree Fellow in Neurology and Master in Sciences (MSc) in Cognitive Neurosciences. Previously, she was Associate Professor and Associate Researcher and Head of the Clinical Neuroimaging Department at the Cuban Neurosciences Center, Havana. Research areas of interest to her are eating epilepsy, brain mapping and functional connectivity in brain tumours.

Dr. Maite Esquijarosa Hechavarria (CUBA) is the Head of the Anaesthesia Department and Lecturer at the School of Medicine. She has been with the university since 2015. Before joining UHAS, she was a Senior Lecturer at the Higher Institute of Medical Science, Ciego de Avila, Cuba and a member of the Cuban Society of Anesthesiologists. She is also a Specialist in Anesthesia and Resuscitation. She area of interests are Anaesthesiology and pain management.

Dr. Orish Verner Ndudiri (NIGERIA) is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the School of Medicine. Prior to this, he was a Senior Medical Officer in the Ghana Health service, working at the Accident and Emergency Unit of Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in the Western Region of Ghana. He was the clinical coordinator of work the world program, supervising and teaching oversees medical and allied health students undergoing clinical electives at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital. He is a Parasitologist and a Physician with great interest in Infectious Disease research.

Dr. Radisnay Guzman Lambert (CUBA) is Senior Lecturer at the Surgical Department of the School of Medicine since 2014. He is also a Fellow in General Surgery, General Doctor, Master in Surgical Emergency. Prior to joining UHAS, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Surgical Department of the Guantanamo Teaching Hospital in the University of Health Santiago de Cuba (2006-2010), Coordinator of the Cuban Medical Brigade posted to the Upper East Regional Hospital, Bolgatanga as General Surgeon (2010-2013), headed the surgery department at Bolgatanga Regional Hospital (Upper East Region-Ghana) (2010-2014). His area of research includes abdomen and breast surgery.

Dr. Magalys Lopez Cuba is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Pathology at the School of Medicine (SOM), University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. She is also a Consultant Pathologist at the Ho-Teaching Hospital. She has a Fellowship in Pathology and a Master of Science (MSc) Bioenergetics and Natural Medicine.

Dr. Manuel Betancourt Benjamin (CUBA) is a Specialist in Radiology, Senior Lecturer and Consultant. He joined the University of Health and Allied Sciences in 2015 and he is currently the Head of Department for the Department of Medical Imaging, School of Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences. He is a member of Ghana Association of Radiologists.

Ms. Gonzalez Mariuska Rodriguez (CUBA) is a chief nursing officer in the Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, UHAS.

Mr. Kannan Govindan (INDIA) is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics, School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. He holds MSc in Electronics from Bharathidasan University, India and BSc in Industrial Electronics from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India.

Mrs. Esther Chinyere Nwogu (NIGERIA) is an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), University of Health and Allieds Sciences, Ho.

Dr. Olawale Ogundiran (NIGERIA) is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS), UHAS.

Dr. Rebecca Bolade Ibine (NIGERIA) is a Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, School of Medicine, UHAS.

Dr. Inemesit Okon Ben (NIGERIA)is a Lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, UHAS.

Dr. Joy Nneoma Akameze (NIGERIA) is a Lecturer in the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, UHAS.

Dr. Veronica Okwuchi Charles-Unadike (NIGERIA) is an expert in Public Health Education and Promotion, and a lecturer in the Department of Population and Behavioral Sciences, Binka School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Volta Region, Ghana.

Visiting Scholars/Adjunct Scholars

Prof. Oluwaseun Olanrewaju Omotayo (NIGERIA) is a visiting scholar (Professor) in the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, UHAS, Ho.

Prof. Isiaka Oladele Oladipo (NIGERIA) is a visiting scholar (Professor) in the School of Sports and Exercise Medicine, UHAS, Ho.

Prof. Adebajo Clement Adeleke (NIGERIA) is an Adjunct Scholar (Professor) of Pharmacognosy in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Herbal Medicine, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho. He joined the School on the 11th of September, 2017.

International Collaborations

Agreements

1. Academics without Borders, Canada

UHAS and Academics Without Borders, a Canadian bilingual NGO, entered into an MoU in January 2018 to support developing countries to develop and expand institutions of higher education by sending volunteers to work on projects in those institutions.

2. University of Basel, Switzerland

University of Health and Allied Sciences has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Nursing Science, University of Basel to promote exchange and cooperation and to foster global development and dissemination of nursing science. The partner institution is UHAS School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM). Collaborative effort in the areas of scientific research, educational activities and initiatives to advance and enhance academic pursuits in nursing shall be undertaken under this partnership. Funding for proposed collaborative endeavours in research and education are to be sought through proposals jointly developed and submitted to domestic and international funding sources. This agreement was signed to foster joint research grant applications and other joint activities. Two UHAS faculty members were invited to Basel following the signing of the agreement.

4. Campbell University, U.S.A.

Campbell University, North Carolina, U.S.A. primarily collaborates with the UHAS School of Public Health in the area of student exchange, students and faculty exchanges, field visits and outreach programmes by students of Campbell and UHAS.

5. DICLE University, Turkey

Dicle University and UHAS have agreed to cooperate for the exchange of students and/or staff in the context of the Erasmus+ programme. Through this agreement, UHAS will soon be a named partner university on the Erasmus+ programme.

6. Georgetown University, U.S.A.

Georgetown University signed an MoU with UHAS to foster student exchange between the two institutions. Every year, between six to eight students in the Master of Science in Global Health programme come to UHAS for a six to 12-week Fall Internship program. UHAS in turn assigns a preceptor who supervises the students' research work.

7. University Grenoble Alpes, France

In seeking to promote the development and growth of exchanges, and academic, scientific and cultural activities, University of Grenoble Alpes and UHAS jointly agreed to promote exchanges of university personnel (students, lecturers and administrators) to develop teaching, research and project activities and to promote joint publications.

8. University of Illinois Springfield, U.S.A.

University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) has entered into a memorandum of understanding with University of Health and Allied Sciences to explore the areas of academic research. UIS collaborates with UHAS School of Public Health in this regard.

9. York University, Toronto, Canada

York University in Toronto, Canada has signed an MOU with UHAS to promote international education and cooperation. The agreement is specifically with the School of Nursing and Midwifery to promote faculty and student exchange. Some faculty from SONAM is expected to undergo training at York soon. York University also sends its Global Health Practicum students to the UHAS School of Public Health, where UHAS staff members supervise them to conduct field research.

10. Zurich University of Applied Sciences

The Zurich University Applied Sciences (ZHAW), represented by the school of Health Sciences, Institute of Nursing and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, represented by the Fred Binka School of Public Health and the School of Nursing and Midwifery has signed an MOU based on the principle of reciprocity and expresses the interest of both parties in working together in the belief that the research and educational processes at both institutions will be enhanced and that mutual understanding between their respective faculty and students will be increased by the establishment of such programs. The collaboration is focused on exchange of academic information and materials, exchange of faculty, exchange of students (undergraduate and/or graduate).

11. DY Patil, Deemed to be University

D Y Patil, Deemed to be university, an educational entity (hereinafter referred to as “DYPU”), and the University of Health and Allied Sciences, a public university established under the laws of the Republic of Ghana (hereinafter referred to as “UHAS”) express the intention to establish a cooperative relationship fostering engagement between the two organizations with respect to the various events and activities for academic and related collaboration in furtherance of their respective mission.

12. UMass Chan Medical School, University of Massachusetts, USA

UHAS and UMass Chan desire, through a cooperative relationship, to engage in joint educational programs and research projects in support of their respective missions and mandate. This MOU provides the foundation and framework for particular projects that may be developed by academic and administrative units from the two institutions of parties for the mutual benefits of the parties. Arrangements for specific activities, projects and other forms of academic. In the establishing mutually beneficial collaborative research projects between departments and individual faculty members, this MoU between UMass Chan Medical School and UHAS.

13. American Institute for Healthcare Quality, USA.

UHAS and AIHQ desire to establish certain cooperative Programmes beneficial to the respective institutions and to promote the development of joint studies, research and training activities, and other related of mutual interest.

14. University of Southampton, UK

UOS and UHAS express the intention to develop academic exchanges and cooperation in teaching and research in furtherance of the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and learning. This collaboration focuses on factors such as exchange of scientific, academic, and technical information and appropriate academic materials.

15. Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria

The collaboration between OAU and UHAS is to strengthening of Postgraduate (PG) Programmes between the various departments of the faculty Pharmacy (FOP) and College of Health Sciences (CHS) in OAU and those of the School of Pharmacy (SOP), Medicine (SOM), Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM), Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) and Public Health (SPH), and Institute of Health Research (IHR) of UHAS.

16. University Medical Center Groningen, Netherlands

In seeking to promote the development and growth of exchanges, and academic, scientific and cultural activities, University Medical Center Groningen and UHAS jointly agreed to promote exchange of Bachelor students, Supervision of PhD Students and to promote joint application for grants.

17. University of Kent, UK

 Kent and UHAS are engaged in staff exchange and the delivery of guest lectures with the aim of furthering academic and research collaboration in fields including community health, wellbeing and allied sciences. Each institution will be responsible for its own costs and expenses incurred in relation to this activity unless otherwise agreed in writing.

18. Utica University, USA

The purpose of this SEA is to promote arid expand international understanding, development, and friendship as well as stimulate and support educational, professional and intercultural activities and projects among students and staff of the two institutions (Utica University and the University of Health and Allied Sciences hereinafter referred to as Utica and the University of Health and Allied Sciences). This SEA sets forth and describes general and specific aspects of the agreement, with the understanding that on the basis of a regular review of activities, the document in both its general and specific content may be revised with the mutual consent of Utica and the University of Health and Allied Sciences individually referred to as a “Party” and collectively as “Parties”.

19. I2C Lab Corp, USA

The Collaboration between UHAS and I2C Lab is focused on mentorship for UHAS students in research, support in library and e-learning resources, provision of textbooks, computers, and other accessories to enable students to access I2C Lab. It also aims at fostering commitment to sponsor at least two students per academic year with USD 1,000.00 each. Two University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) students have been awarded the i2C Lab Corp scholarship worth $1000 each to cover their tuition and research expenses.

20. University of Southampton, UK

This MoU is focused on exchange of scientific, academic, and technical information and appropriate academic materials and other information of mutual interest.

21. New York University, USA

Joint educational, cultural and research activities, exchange of faculty members and advanced graduate students for research lectures and discussions are some of the objectives the MoU between New York University and UHAS seeks to foster and establish.

22. Sivas Cumhuriyet University (Erasmus + Programme Inter-institutional Agreement), Turkey

UHAS and Sivas Cumhuriyet University have agreed to cooperate for the exchange of students and / or staff in the context of the Erasmus+ programme.

23. University of Eastern Finland, Finland

This collaboration is focused on changing material and know-how, faculty and student mobility, research proposal writing and joint research activities or other related activities.

Study Abroad Programmes

Information Sessions

The Office of International Programmes organises information sessions for all students of UHAS. The University has built strong relations with Campus France of the French Embassy and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Representatives from these institutions, in collaboration with OIP, organise information sessions on study, research and funding opportunities in various countries. OIP is working at instituting these as annual events.

Academic Exchanges

OIP fosters academic exchanges between UHAS and other institutions here in Ghana and abroad. In the last couple of years, we have formed very concrete relationships with a number of institutions.

Leeds Beckett University Masters in Public Health (Health Promotion)

The Leeds Beckett University in the UK offers a part-time Master's degree in Public Health Promotion, taught at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. The programme is suitable for anyone making contribution to public health promotion in the widest sense, the course emphasizes the role of the public health practitioner in tackling the social determinants of health. The programme is largely taught by Leeds Beckett academic staff. Attendance is in blocks of two weeks, five times across two years, followed by a period of study for dissertation. Most students offering the programme are funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship.

Student Exchange Activities

The University recognises that international student exchange programmes are critical for creating educational opportunities that help build bridges of understanding among students from diverse countries. It therefore places utmost importance on these activities. OIP therefore fosters collaborations with our international partners in this regard. Currently, the University engages in active student exchanges with the following institutions:

University of Birmingham

Ms. Sharon Darkwa came on a six-week attachment to the Centre for Malaria Research at the Institute of Health Research, UHAS. While here, she carried out field work under the RTS,S malaria vaccine study and was supervised by Professor Evelyn Ansah. This research went towards her thesis entitled: “Willingness to pay for the RTS,S malaria vaccine, and other routine immunisations in the Volta region, Ghana: A qualitative exploratory study.”

Campbell University, U.S.A.

Campbell University cooperates with UHAS School of Public Health in the area of student exchange. The first batch of students undertook their practicum session at the UHAS School of Public Health in May 2019. About their experiences at UHAS, the faculty and students wrote: "We wish to express our satisfaction with the hospitality and training provided by University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) during our study abroad trip in May 2019. UHAS is truly a destination of choice for practicum and student experience."

Georgetown University, U.S.A.

So far, two batches of Masters students from Georgetown University have undertaken their practicum at UHAS. They were supervised by Professors from the Institute of Health Research.

Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF)/SONAM Student Exchange Programme

UHAS School of Nursing and Midwifery and students from the Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF), an organisation of Nursing students from all over Korea, have engaged in joint activities to promote nursing services in selected communities in the Volta Region. University of Illinois Springfield, U.S.A.

Global Health students of the University of Illinois Springfield, under the supervision of selected faculty from the UHAS School of Public Health undertake their field practicum in Hohoe municipality. The first batch of students completed a six-week practicum in May 2019.

York University, Toronto, Canada

The first batch of exchange students from York University, Canada, did their field practicum at the UHAS School of Public Health in January 2020.

Capacity Building

Mr. Afaya Agani

Mr. Afaya Agani, an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, is currently in South Korea for his Doctoral programme. He is taking the compulsory Korean Language course at Chonnam National University for a year before he proceeds with his Ph.D. at Yonsei University in August 2020. His report indicates he's making progress and faring well.

Mr. Kennedy Konlan

Mr. Kennedy Konlan, an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Public Health Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, is currently in South Korea preparing towards his Doctoral programme. He is taking the compulsory one-year Korean Language course at Chonnam National University. He starts his Ph.D. programme in Nursing at Yonsei University in August 2020.

Mr. Prince Appiah Kubi

Mr. Prince Appiah Kubi, from UHAS School of Public Health is currently a Doctoral Student at the Asian Institute for Bioethics and Health Law, Yonsei University. His area of specialization is Health Law and Ethics. His supervisor is Professor Kim So Yoon.

Mr. Eric Osei

Mr. Eric Osei, from UHAS School of Public Health, is currently undergoing his doctoral studies in Clinical Epidemiology at the Graduate School of Public Health, Yonsei University. Professor Hyeon Chang Kim is his mentor. He appreciates the opportunity to study in South Korea on the Korean Government Scholarship programme.
