The University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS) held its 5th Matriculation Ceremony for Six Hundred and Seventy nine (679) freshmen and women who gained admission for the 2018/2019 Sandwich Programme. The ceremony was held at the University’s Cedi Auditorium, Main Campus, Ho.
Addressing the matriculants, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, Vice Chancellor, explained the importance of matriculation ceremony. He stated that: “taking the matriculation oath signifies that you have been officially inducted into the University”. He indicated that the matriculation process allows fresh students to become full members of the University.
The Vice Chancellor described the matriculants as privileged because the University received Nine Hundred and Fifty Three (953) applications, but admitted Six Hundred and Seventy Nine (679) to read various undergraduate programmes at the School of Allied Health, School of Nursing and Midwifery and School of Public Health.
Professor Gyapong encouraged freshmen and women to abide by the tenets of the Matriculation Oath and be guided by the rules and regulations contained in the students’ handbook. He implored them to be worthy ambassadors of the University.
He said as one of the youngest public universities in Ghana, UHAS students face a number of challenges in the areas of infrastructure and transportation. He assured the students that Management has in place diverse strategies to boost the facilities available and build new ones. He took opportunity to hint of the construction of the second phase project of UHAS which comprise of the ultra-modern administration block and School of Nursing and Midwifery. He said the School of Nursing and Midwifery when completed in two-years will be the most equipped Nursing and Midwifery School in Africa.
The Vice Chancellor urged the matriculants to wholeheartedly embrace the opportunities that UHAS presents. He advised them to achieve excellence by developing critical thinking skills and have the right balance between their academic and social lives.
Professor Gyapong summed up his address by cautioning the freshmen and women to adhere to the rules and regulations of the University community and particularly admonished them against Sexual Harassment and Examination Malpractices.
The Registrar, Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo who administered the Matriculation Oath, congratulated the students and also advised them to be disciplined Junior Members of UHAS.
Miss Jody Yeboaa Bio, student of the School of Public Health delivered an address on behalf of the 2018/2019 Sandwich Matriculants. She appealed to the University authorities and Government to attend to the pressing challenges that students face. She also expressed on behalf of his colleagues their appreciation to the management, faculty and staff of the University for the warm reception accorded them.
The matriculation ceremony was attended by officials of the University including the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Seth Owusu-Agyei, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments and other members of Convocation. A number of parents, guardians and other relatives of the matriculants also witnessed the ceremony.
