A delegation of 9 (Nine) American educators from the Oakland Unified School District, Savannah State University and  Mills College in Oakland, California paid a day visit to the Department of General and Liberal Studies, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). The visit was to afford them an opportunity to explore developments in areas such as faculty capacities and curriculum that support the teaching of language and literacy to linguistically and culturally diverse students.

According to the leader of the delegation, Professor Emmanuel Naniuzey from the Savannah State University, the visit was also to provide a learning opportunity which will increase their knowledge and awareness of diversity through the study of linguistic and cultural heterogeneity in Ghana.

Mr. Nathaniel Glover-Meni, Acting Head, Department of General and Liberal Studies, who received the delegation on behalf of the Acting Dean, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS), welcomed the delegation to UHAS and expressed the School’s readiness to collaborate with them in the near future.

At the presentation session,   Mr. Richard Awubomu, an Assistant lecturer, took the delegation through a presentation entitled; ‘Ethnic and Religious Diversity in Ghana as well as its’ impact on education in Ghana’. His presentation touched briefly on the geographical and historical antecedents of Ghana, Ethnic groups, Religion and their integration in formal education settings.

Dr. Samuel Kofi Donkor, a Lecturer of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Studies, University of Ghana, also took his turn to speak on the topic: ‘Curriculum development for primary and high school education in Ghana’s public schools’. He explained to the audience the factors that influence the development of curricular in Ghana by citing examples from both the past and present experiences.

The American Educators together with the faculty members also shared ideas on the advanced linguistic Studies, overlaps and effect in the multinational settings.
The delegation presented One Hundred and fifty Dollars ($150.00) to the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences as a token of appreciation.

In brief remarks, Ms. Ivy Florence Ayivor-Vieira, School Officer for SBBS conveyed the school’s appreciation for the visit. She also expressed immense gratitude towards the donation presented to the School.

Other members of the delegation were; Professor Toma Galguera (Director of Teacher Education Programme), Professor Nolan Jones (Adjunt Professor and Director of Online Masters), Professor Mara Chavez-Diaz (Assistant Professor) from the Mills College Oakland with Ms. Darnisha Wright, Ms. Valeska-Denitze Munot, Ms. Leah Aguilera, Mr. James Barabuto, and Ms. Acacia Woods Chan; Teachers from Oakland Unified School District.
