The Volta Regional Hospital has been converted into a Teaching Hospital with an inaugural ceremony on Monday, April 29, 2019 at the UHAS Auditorium. In June 2018, the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo made an announcement of Cabinets’ approval to convert the Volta Regional Hospital into Ho Teaching Hospital when he visited the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho as part of his Volta Regional tour. The Ho Teaching Hospital will be uniquely placed to train not only Medical Students of UHAS but all other Health professionals trained in UHAS as well.

The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Archibald Letsa, in his welcome address stated that, the day is memorable in the history of the region because the Ho Teaching Hospital will be the 5th teaching hospital in Ghana to provide innovative and advanced health care. He also mentioned that, the hospital as a teaching hospital will now be eligible to attract specialists and consultants and bring tertiary health care to the doorstep of the people in the Volta Region. He ended his address by stating that, he is very confident the Ho Teaching Hospital will be a Medical Tourism Centre of International repute.

The Special Guest of honour, Togbe Howusu, Chief of the Dome traditional area and the war lord of the Ho Traditional area who represented Togbe Afede ⅩⅣ in his remarks appreciated the government for the upgrade of the Volta Regional Hospital into Ho Teaching Hospital. He said, the conversion will be of great benefit to students being trained in UHAS.  Togbe Howusu however pleaded with the government to provide a Regional hospital for the Volta Region since the existing one is now a teaching hospital.

The Vice Chancellor of UHAS, Professor John Owusu Gyapong in his address stated that, the Ho Teaching Hospital will join Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital as the newest teaching hospital. He stated that, the destinies of both the Ho Teaching Hospital and UHAS are closely linked because of the mutual benefits both outfits will derive from each other. Professor Gyapong mentioned that, the faculty and trainees from UHAS will continue to conduct high quality research to raise the standing, recognition and ranking of the Teaching Hospital.

The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwaku Agyemang – Manu, in his address is elated about the inauguration of the Ho Teaching Hospital. He said, the Ho Teaching Hospital has been assessed by all the relevant regulatory bodies for the purpose of accreditation and the all recommendations made have been considered.

The minister promised that, the infrastructural deficit in the hospital will be solved, equipment like CT Scan among others will be provided, the HR unit of the Ministry of Health will be charged to provide a special dispensation to the Ho Teaching Hospital to improve the Human Resource situation of the Hospital to increase manpower and also enhance Post Graduate training of professionals in UHAS in order to provide adequate specialists to enhance health development in Ghana.

Hon. Manu however pleaded with the Vice Chancellor and management of UHAS to help train Hospital Administrators and Managers as part of its mandate. He also took the opportunity to mention the first management team of the Ho Teaching Hospital and officially inaugurated the Ho Teaching Hospital.

The acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ho Teaching Hospital, Dr. John Tampori delivered an addressed at the ceremony. He said, the hospital has set up a communication team to inform and educate the members of the community about the change that will accompany the change of status of the hospital. The people will be educated about the change in practices and operations of the hospital to prepare them to conform to the standards of the hospital. He ended his address by stating that, the “most important preparation is our mindset” from a regional hospital into a teaching hospital and this can be achieved through determination. He promised that, the Ho Teaching Hospital will have customer care as a hallmark.

The Chairman of the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Delanyo Dorvlo in his closing remarks said, he is very confident that the management of both UHAS and the Ho Teaching Hospital would get the Hospital into its required state. He intimated that, the re-designation will be informed by efforts to make Ho Teaching Hospital an exemplary one to train excellent professionals and also deliver pertinent health care. He admonished the hospital to become a think tank to provide ideas for health development in Ghana.

The colorful ceremony was also attended by the Chairman of the UHAS Council, Justice Jones M. Dotse, Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Seth Owusu Agyei, Registrar, Dr. Sena Kpeglo, other Senior Management Members of UHAS, Traditional authorities in the Volta Region, Representatives of financial institutions and organizations, ,Staff of the Ho teaching Hospital, Staff and Students of UHAS.
