Professor Seth Ogyebre Owusu-Agyei, Director, Institute of Health Research at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), delivered his inaugural lecture on the topic: The Fight Against Malaria: Is Elimination in Sight? The Inaugural Lecture, which happened to be the first of its kind in UHAS, was chaired by the Vice Chancellor, Professor John Owusu Gyapong..

Professor Seth Ogyebre Owusu-Agyei earlier recounted his experiences during school years and his professional career as a Director at the Ministry of Health, a Lecturer and a Researcher. He touched on a number of research works he has undertaken as an epidemiologist over the last thirty (30) years, notably, his research into communicable/infectious diseases and in maternal/child micronutrient supplementation initiatives and predominantly on Malaria. Professor Owusu-Agyei who was the director of Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC), from July 2002 to February 2017, called on government to provide the necessary funding for researchers looking into finding a vaccine to completely eliminate Malaria. He finally entreated the general public to consider hygiene as a critical factor in the control and subsequent elimination of the disease.

In earlier remarks, the Registrar of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, highlighted the significance of inaugural lectures and noted that it is the duty of every academia who achieves the highest rank in his or her career in a university to deliver an inaugural lecture. More importantly, she said, as one of the youngest public universities in the country, inaugural lectures could serve as one of the many platforms available for marketing developments going on in UHAS.

In his remarks as the Chairman, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Owusu Gyapong said, despite the remarkable achievements and efforts from researchers and research centres globally, a lot more ought to be done in Ghana and across the continent. He therefore called for a greater collaboration with both local and international partners in the fight against Malaria.

He appreciated the works of Professor Owusu-Agyei on Malaria, and noted that his research has greatly influenced public policy on Malaria.

Professor Gyapong called on young researchers to identify the numerous gaps in the various researched areas on Malaria. He concluded by assuring the younger generation that good work gets acknowledged.

Among those present at the maiden inaugural lecture were Deans, Directors, and members of the University community. Also present were Professor Fred Binka (the Foundation Vice-Chancellor of UHAS), family and friends of Professor Owusu-Agyei and the general public .
