The 2021/2022 batch of Sandwich students have been successfully matriculated with a call to work towards excellence, integrity, innovation, service and care as ambassadors of UHAS. 864 students were admitted into the Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing and Midwifery, and Public Health.

Mr. Bismark N. Kpordzaxor, speaking on behalf of his colleague freshmen, said the second stanza of the University anthem has set clear targets for them and “it behoves us to put maximum effort into making our alma mater proud.” He also outlined some infrastructural challenges students are facing, and pleaded with the University authorities to help resolve them in the shortest possible time.

In Vice Chancellor Professor Lydia Aziato’s speech to the matriculants, she entreated them to be guided by the four core values and ethos of UHAS, i.e., excellence, integrity, innovation, and service and care, in the course of their studentship and beyond. “Remember you are our ambassadors and our pride for the rest of your lives.” She applauded the students, especially the pregnant and nursing mothers, for making the right decision in choosing UHAS, saying that the University continues to strive to provide quality educational opportunities to students and healthcare professionals to improve health and quality of life. “We have competent and experienced faculty, administrators and other professionals to provide you with the training you require,” she added.

Professor Aziato urged them to embrace the opportunity and “develop critical thinking skills” to achieve excellence as well as maintain a balance between academic and social life, noting that “no human endeavour can attain the desired level of success without discipline.”

Responding to the appeal for more infrastructure, she assured the students that the University is poised to rectify those problems: “Various strategies are in the pipeline to enhance the existing facilities as well as develop new ones,” she said. She appealed to stakeholders and well-meaning people to come to the aid of the young university.

On examination malpractice, she cautioned the students against such acts as the University frowns upon such. “If you are found culpable, the appropriate sanctions will be swiftly and fully applied,” she warned.

Miss Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, Registrar, advised the students, who were granted permission by the Ghana Health Service to continue their education, to honour their part of that agreement: “Don’t cease dialogue and communication with your employers. Let them in on your progress and schedules,” she said. She noted that failure to do so would be detrimental, not only to their own educational pursuits, but also to others who are awaiting permission to study.
