The University of Health and Allied Sciences’ Appeals Board was inaugurated on Friday, August 23rd, 2019 at the Council Chamber, Main Campus, Ho. The Appeals Board comprises five (5) members namely; Mrs. Sheila Y. N. Minkah-Premo; Mr. Samuel Walter Kofi Buami; Mr. Richard B. K. Aboagye; Rev. Elizabeth Mavis Yawa Niboe and chaired by His Lordship, Justice Emmanuel Kwami Ayebi.

In his welcome address, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, Vice Chancellor of UHAS, mentioned that, the constitution and inauguration of the UHAS’ Appeals Board is another milestone chalked in the development of UHAS as a center of excellence, training and research. He said, in every organization, conflict is bound to happen since it is inevitable. However, with the occurrence of conflict, there must be a good avenue for resolution. The Vice Chancellor also stated that, the Act 828, 2011 that established the University made provisions for the formation of the UHAS’ Appeals Board.

According to Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the Board will address issues such as breach of employment by the University, promotions of persons who are duly eligible, grievances by students against the University on matters relating to welfare and discipline and also any other issues employees may be aggrieved about. He however noted that, over the years, the University has enjoyed a very cordial relationship with its employees. Where necessary, the University uses its internal processes, hence the Disciplinary Committee to resolve issues. The Vice Chancellor assures the board of management’s support and coordination.

His Lordship Justice Victor Jones Mawulorm Dotse, Chairman of Council in his remarks reiterated the fact that, the members of the board have been carefully selected to fit the purpose hence he is positive that, they will not disappoint the University community. He added that, there may be instances that the University Council or management may get it wrong regarding issues in relation to staff and students. The Chairman stated that, the establishment of the Appeals Board will curtail the frequent resort to the law courts. He is convinced that, the board will rise up to the occasion to create an enabling environment and confidence in the various constituents of UHAS.

His Lordship, Justice Emmanuel Kwami Ayebi, Chairman of the Appeals Board expressed appreciation on behalf of his other members for the opportunity to serve the University. He said, in any form of conflict, the fate of the parties involved must be decided and that is the role of the Board. He also mentioned that, conflict and dialogue in an organization is inevitable due to the varied needs and wants of individuals. The Chairman of the Appeals Board said, they will be counting on the support of all and sundry in order to function effectively.

Also present at the inaugural ceremony were, Professor Seth Owusu Agyei, Pro-Vice Chancellor; Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, Registrar; Deans and Directors; Representatives of UTAG, TEWU, FUSSAG and GAUA and Mr. Cedric Bobson Dorkenoo, Secretary to the Appeals Board.
