The University of Health and Allied Sciences Basic School (UBS) on 16 December, graduated its first batch of of 21 learners (11 boys and 10 girls) from the Kindergarten Department. The occasion was also used to celebrate the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, marked by very colourful performances from the learners, much to the delight of their parents and officials from the mother university.
Mr. Seth Korgah, Head of UHAS Basic School, in his welcome address said that religious festivals run through the school curriculum right from KG, through Primary to JHS, noting that it is important to take opportunity of the season to make practical the lessons taught in the classroom. He said it is important to graduate learners from the KG to the next level because Kindergarten education is unique in that it prepares the children physically, mentally and morally fort the next level.
The Registrar, Dr. Cynthia S. Kpeglo, who was Chairperson for the occasion, appreciated staff of the Basic School and parents for their commitment and dedication. She said, the history of UHAS Basic School must be documented so that posterity will know how it all started, adding that, this institution is “comparable to all other university basic schools in the country, or even better.”
Mr. David Adzovie, Director of Human Resources, who gave a short Christmas message, said: “As we celebrate Christmas, I entreat you to find love and to make love central in everything you do” because as one expresses love to others, he or she is qualified to be a wise man as defined in the Bible.
Professor Margaret Gyapong, Director of the Institute of Health Research, who delivered the keynote address, expressed her excitement at the performance of the children. She said, “The high standard that has been set in the UHAS Basic School should be maintained so that, one day, the names of our children will be found on the list of great African leaders who will lead by serving.”
There was a goodwill message delivered by Professor T.C. Fleischer, Board Chairman of the UHAS Basic School, who stated that the main objective of establishing the Basic School was to enrol the children of UHAS staff, who are mostly young professionals. He said, at the inception, Management did not have any idea how it would go, but now, “it’s a school where a lot of people in town want to bring their children.” Thanking all persons who played a role in the establishment of the University, he concluded his message by saying, “I think we have done a great job!”
Mrs. Maria Gwira, Director of Public Affairs, also shared a goodwill message on behalf of the Management, Faculty and Staff of the University, with the audience, acknowledging all the various stakeholders and the parts they each played.
It was a thrilling event filled with readings, music, drama, and other cultural displays; and an astounding speech from the representative of the graduating Kindergarten class, Miss Fidelia Afi Aweyona Kpodo. She said, she and her colleagues can stick their chest out to say they have been trained for both academic and extra curricula activities, good morals, values and etiquette.
