The University Council led by its Chairman, His Lordship Justice Victor Jones Mawulorm Dotse paid a courtesy call on Togbe Sri III (Awomefia) – Paramount Chief of the Anlo state in his palace at Anloga on Tuesday, August 20, 2019.
His Lordship Justice Victor Jones Mawulorm Dotse, the Chairman of Council, expressed appreciation to Togbe Sri Ⅲ for his support to the University of Health and Allied Sciences in releasing land for the commencement of the School of Pharmacy in Keta. He also disclosed the purpose of the meeting, thus, to explain why the School is yet to be established.
In his welcome address, Togbe Boni of Woe, the spokesperson of Awomefia, stated that, the traditional area of Anlo State have been anticipating this meeting in order to understand the reasons for the establishment of the School of Pharmacy in Ho instead of Keta as promised.
Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the Vice Chancellor explained that, per the act that established the University, UHAS is to be sited in Ho, Hohoe and any other community determined by Council members, which has already been promised to Keta, by the Government of Ghana. He said, the Keta Municipal Assembly has already released an office complex, an accommodation facility and a hospital which needs remodelling coupled with other necessary equipment to accommodate the School of Pharmacy at Keta.
The current University Council decided to temporally begin the School of Pharmacy in 2018 since it has all the required lecture halls, lecturers, administrative staff and the equipment needed at the then Volta Regional Hospital site (Ho Teaching Hospital) for the quality training of the Pharmacy students. He further mentioned that, the Doctor of Pharmacy program needs be run with the Ho Teaching Hospital facility.
Togbe Sri III expressed his appreciation for the enlightenment on the issue at hand and assured members present that, he will do his utmost best to bring financiers on board to help the development of infrastructure for the School of Pharmacy. He also promised to clarify any misconception on the ground about the establishment of the School in Keta.
Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, the Registrar expressed her gratitude on behalf of the UHAS Council for the opportunity to clarify the misconception while fostering a stronger bond between UHAS and the Anlo state.
