The Members of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Council paid a courtesy call on Togbe Fia Kwaku III, the Paramount Chief of Sokode Traditional Area at his Sokode-Etoe Palace. The UHAS Council Chairman, His Lordship Justice Victor Jones Mawulom Dotse expressed the University’s profound gratitude to the chiefs and people of Sokode Traditional Area for their support towards the establishment of the University. He said the call was part of the programmes lined-up to introduce the new UHAS Council to the chiefs and people in the catchment areas of the University and also to assure the community members of the readiness of the University to involve them in the development of UHAS.

In a message read on his behalf, Togbe Fia Kwaku III expressed his community’s satisfaction with their relation with the University. He hoped the cherished rapport with UHAS will ever subsist in order to enhance the rapid development of the Sokode community.

Togbe Fia Kwaku III made a number of requests; all of which were targeted at the development of the community. He particularly requested that as a host community to the first public university in the region, there should be a special admission protocol arrangement for Sokode citizens.

In response to the issues raised, the Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, Professor John Owusu Gyapong, who is also a member of the Council, explained that the University has a responsibility towards the community regarding admissions and employment. He said the University Management is ever ready and willing to meet with the chiefs and people of the catchment areas to deliberate on ways of tackling the issues raised. 

The Registrar of the University, Dr Sena Kpeglo, on her part informed the gathering that the community has already started benefitting from admissions and employment opportunities in UHAS. She further called for the continuous support of the community.

Present at the meeting were chiefs and elders of the Sokode Community and representatives of the Volta Caucus in Parliament.
