Professor John Owusu Gyapong, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho (UHAS) has called for a special funding for UHAS as one of the youngest public universities in Ghana. He stated that, for UHAS to address its enormous infrastructure deficit, Government should have a unique funding arrangement and support for the University. According to him, it is unfortunate that UHAS together with the other newly established universities have so far been considered on the same level with the already established state universities.

The Vice-Chancellor put across these concerns when the new UHAS Council Members met with the Chairman and Members of the Volta Caucus in Parliament. In a presentation to the Caucus, Professor Gyapong intimated that, as the only public university exclusively dedicated to the training of health professionals in the country, it is imperative that UHAS is made central in the development agenda of the country.

He further said that, with the expected high output from the free Senior High School (SHS) programme in the next three years, UHAS is one of the right institutions to strategically position to absorb the resultant SHS graduates.

The meeting was held under the leadership of His Lordship Victor Jones Mawulom Dotse, the new Chairman of the University of Health and Allied Sciences Council.  His Lordship used the occasion to passionately appeal to the Members of Parliament to be lobbyists for UHAS.

The Chairman of the Volta Caucus, Honourable Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah expressed their readiness to lobby for and support development projects in UHAS.

Other members of the Volta Caucus present were Honourable Peter Nortsu-Kotoe (Member of Parliament for Akatsi North and Ranking Member for Education), Honourable Charles Agbeve (Member of Parliament for Agortime-Ziope), Honourable Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah (Member of Parliament for Buem), Honourable Mrs Alorwu-Tay (Member of Parliament for Afadjato South) and Honourable Benjamin Kpodo (Member of Parliament for Ho Central).
