As part of activities to mark this year’s SRC Week celebration which ran from 10 to 17 July, the executives of UHAS-SRC organized football and volleyball games at the Ho and Hohoe campuses on July 14 in honour of Vice-Chancellor Professor John Gyapong, outgoing Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Seth Owusu-Agyei, and IHR Director Professor Margaret Gyapong. This was the 7th Sports Festival held by the student body.

In football, School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences thrashed School of Pharmacy two goals to nil; Physician Assistants Students Association of Ghana (PASAG) went down by a goal from the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM); School of Medicine and School of Pharmacy played zero-zero at full time; while School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) beat PASAG two goals to nil.

After a fiercely contested match, SONAM played against defending champions SAHS for the bragging rights in the finals. A no-goal from both teams after full-time ran the match into penalty shootouts. At the end, SONAM was crowned champion of the 7th UHAS-SRC Week celebration.

In women’s volleyball, SONAM came first in the competition, with SOM and SAHS carrying second and third positions respectively. Miss Francisca Ntsiful from SAHS was adjudged the ‘Margaret Gyapong Volleyball Player’ of the tournament.

Closing the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Professor John Gyapong praised the students for competing in a healthy manner, and cautioned them to continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols. He also encouraged them to see sporting activities as avenues for exploiting and harnessing their other potentials.

The Students Representative Council of UHAS also organized a blood drive on July 15 to augment the scarce supplies at the blood banks of Ho Teaching Hospital and Hohoe Municipal Hospital as part of their SRC Week celebration.

Mr. Sylvanus Hadzitsey, the blood organizer for Hohoe Municipal Hospital, commended the students for augmenting their banks, saying, “Any exercise to save lives is a very important to the health sector.” He said the hospital sometimes has challenges of transfusing blood to patients due to blood shortages or unavailability of a certain blood type.

Mr. Felix Apaloo, SRC-UHAS President said the drive, which was supported by Trafalgar Gate Pharmacy, was “a community service to the people” meant to save more lives. He noted that one of their colleagues, who was to have undergone surgery a week ago, had found it difficult to secure blood for the operation, and this was one of the reasons they had mounted the blood drive.

He commended the students’ body and the general public for partaking in the exercise. He noted that they targeted 100 pints of blood; they received 75 from Ho donors by close of the exercise, while Hohoe campus also contributed 22 units to the Hohoe Municipal Hospital, making a total of 97 pints of blood donated.
