Bernard Kofi Turkson is an Assistant Research Fellow in the Institute of Traditional and Alternative Medicine (ITAM) of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho. Before his appointment by the university, he was a Medical Herbalist at the Tafo Government Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana. He is passionate about the practice of traditional medicine and goes all out to support every move in this direction.
Education
Mr. Turkson holds a Bachelor of Science in Herbal Medicine and Master of Philosophy in Pharmacognosy, both from KNUST, Kumasi; where he is also a PhD student. As a Medical Herbalist, he was the head of the herbal medicine unit at the Tafo Government Hospital. He also lectured at the College of Integrated Health, Obuasi.
Science /Research output
Mr. Turkson’s research is into natural products, with a special interest in the potential of medicinal plants for managing malaria, diabetes, liver disorders and NTDs. He has participated in local and international conferences and research seminars, and advocacy projects including the integration of herbal medicine into the mainstream health care delivery system of Ghana. Mr. Turkson has 5 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 2 conference presentations.
