Students of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Programme at the School of Basic and Biomedical Sciences (SBBS), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Ho on Friday, February 13, 2026 have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service through a well-coordinated charity drive aimed at supporting vulnerable members of society.
Organised under the auspices of the UHAS chapter of the Ghana Biochemistry Students Association (GHABSA–UHAS), the outreach initiative, themed “Charity Drive – A Day of Impact,” went beyond a routine volunteer activity. It reflected the core values of empathy, generosity and social responsibility that underpin the mission of UHAS. United by a shared purpose, the students carefully planned and passionately executed the programme to make a meaningful and lasting impact.
The charity drive commenced with a visit to the Children’s Ward of the Ho Teaching Hospital, where the students were warmly received by both staff and patients. The ward was soon filled with smiles and renewed energy as the students interacted with the young patients, transforming the clinical atmosphere into one of warmth and cheer.
Food supplies were presented to support the children and their caregivers, helping to alleviate some of the daily challenges associated with hospitalization. Beyond the donations, the students spent time engaging the children - sharing stories, offering words of encouragement, and creating moments of joy. For many of the participants, the interactions served as a powerful reminder of the resilience of children and the profound impact of simple acts of kindness.
Following the hospital outreach, the team proceeded to the Madamfo Children’s Home, where they were met with excitement and warm hospitality. The students donated a range of essential items, including clothing, food supplies, toiletries and stationery - resources critical to the children’s health, comfort and educational development.
The visit was marked by an atmosphere of genuine connection and high spirits. Students engaged the children through lively conversations, storytelling, mentorship and playful activities, creating moments filled with laughter and inspiration. What began as a donation exercise evolved into a meaningful exchange of hope, encouragement and shared humanity.
For the students, the experience reinforced the importance of giving back to society and remaining connected to the communities they serve. It also underscored the belief that, as future scientists and health professionals, their responsibilities extend beyond the laboratory and classroom to include compassion, service and social impact.
The initiative stands as a testament to GHABSA–UHAS’ ongoing commitment to community engagement and social responsibility. It highlights the association’s dedication to nurturing not only academic excellence but also well-rounded individuals who are socially conscious and driven to make a positive difference.
The Executive Board of GHABSA–UHAS expressed heartfelt appreciation to all members, donors, and supporters whose contributions ensured the success of the charity drive. Through financial assistance, item donations and active participation, each contribution played a vital role in bringing the vision of “A Day of Impact” to life.
