CONFERENCE THEME AND SUB-THEMES:
The theme for this year’s conference is: Forging partnerships in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals: The role of academic and research institutions. There are three sub-themes:
A. Inclusive partnerships among academia, research, health sector and industry for human development and well-being
B. Environmental protection, climate change and health
C. Good health and wellbeing, quality education, gender equality and reduction of inequality
Background
Research and innovation hold promise for the future in dealing with the complexity of developmental challenges fronting our society today. Intense pertinent transdisciplinary research that leads to innovation and discovery is critical in the 21st century. In the global advancement towards 2030, there is a sense of urgency to evaluate if partnerships at home and abroad are sufficient in their present form to reach the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By their design, each goal is dependent on or related to another. With less than 10 years to the 2030 agenda for the SDGs, not much has been achieved in Africa and there is the need for ambitious actions to speed up progress. The complexity of the SDGs and the current state of the planet requires a paradigm shift in the way we work together.
Although the SDGs are not particularly focused on higher education, education, research and innovation are essential in sustainable development, making universities and research institutions key contributors to achieving the goals.
Since its introduction about five years ago, the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the first global attempt to measure the progress of higher education institutions around the SDGs. The Impact Rankings can be the catalyst for action, a mechanism for holding our universities to account, and an opportunity for the universities to highlight great work they are already doing.
In this conference, we look forward to seeing and hearing about how academic and research institutions have forged partnerships with each other and relevant stakeholders to generate the needed information for action in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Targeted participants include but are not limited to: industry players; development partners; government agencies; NGOs; health practitioners; policy makers; students; academics and researchers.
