The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) held a matriculation ceremony on Saturday, September 28, 2019 to welcome about 1,968 newly admitted students pursuing various academic programmes at all the university’s campuses.
According to the university’s 2019/2020 admissions statistics, UHAS received a total of 4714 applications for both undergraduate and post graduate programmes. Of the 1,968 admitted applicants, 1041 had reported for classes as at the time of Matriculation, with 1005 undergraduates and 36 in postgraduates programmes.
Professor John Owusu Gyapong, Vice Chancellor, congratulated the freshmen, comprising 62.5% women and 37.5% men, for their diligence in qualifying for admission to UHAS, the only public university in Ghana that is solely dedicated to the training of health professionals.
The Vice Chancellor advised the matriculants to contribute their quota to enhance the image of UHAS by participating fully in all activities. He reminded them that, they had been admitted as individuals and would be treated as such; they should, therefore, carefully study the Student Hand Book, adhere to its tenets, and focus on their studies.
Earlier, the Registrar, Dr. Cynthia Sena Kpeglo, in a brief welcome statement, had informed the students that, the ceremony was to matriculate students admitted for the academic year for courses leading to the conferment of undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Health and Allied Sciences. She later administered the matriculation oath to officially induct them as Junior Members of the university community.
The first male student to register this academic year, Mr. Stephen Obeng , a Bachelor of Physician Assistantship (Clinical) student, on behalf of the 2019/2020 matriculants, expressed their delight and fulfillment in gaining admission into UHAS and congratulated his colleagues for their official induction as Junior Members of the university community. He also outlined to management, a number of challenges that new students were already facing on campus.
Mr. Obeng reminded his colleagues that, they had come this far to pursue various programmes in order to contribute meaningfully to the development of society and also to exploit their potentials. He was later joined by Miss Regina Nyakpo, a Bachelor of Midwifery student and the first female to complete registration, to sign the Matricula on behalf of their colleague freshmen.
The ceremony was attended by officials of the university including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Deans and Directors, Heads of Department, Faculty and other Members of Convocation, and witnessed by some parents and guardians. In attendance were the School of Public Health’s Seraphs Choir and the UHAS Choir.
