University of Health and Allied Sciences signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shantou University Medical College (SUMC), which is located in Guangdong Province in the People's Republic of China, at a brief ceremony held in the Council Chamber, UHAS Main Campus on Wednesday 7 December.

The primary purpose of this agreement is to provide the framework for any future binding contracts regarding friendly relations and cooperation between SUMC and UHAS, to enable both universities to engage in cooperative opportunities in the areas of faculty exchange programmes, collaborative research, joint education of students, training of faculty, and joint establishment and management of affiliated hospitals of UHAS. Other areas of cooperation would focus on cultural interchange between the two universities.

Addressing the gathering after a brief but comprehensive presentation on UHAS to the SUMC delegation, Professor Gyapong indicated that, “although UHAS is a very young and small health research-focused university, we have had some significant achievements during the last nine years and are ready to collaborate in the areas dentistry, anaesthesia, and research.”

On the part of SUMC, Professor Zhuang said, “Shantou University Medical College has a similar vision of university development. This collaboration is therefore of great essence to SUMC.”  She further stated that the cooperation would explore potential collaborations between SUMC and UHAS.

Professor Zhuang Shaohui is a consultant anaesthesiologist with the First Affiliated Hospital of SUMC and doubles as the Chief/Team Lead of the 10th Chinese Medical Team in Ghana.
